I teach three seventh grade Gifted Language Arts classes.  To begin the project, my classes read The Giver by Lois Lowry.  While reading the book, we discussed the concept of “utopia” that is presented in the story.  We arrived at the conclusion that although Jonas lived in a utopia, there were numerous problems.  When we finished the book, the students used Inspiration to brainstorm the ways in which the main character, Jonas, improved his society.  This led to another web that outlined the different problems in our local community. In addition to answering the question, “How can you impact the world?” the students focused on two other questions: “What would you like to fix in your world?” and “How can you fix it?”
The list of problems included global warming, bullying, drug abuse, teen depression, and smoking.  The students formed groups of two-three, selected a topic, and began researching information for their Public Service Announcement scripts.  While some students looked for images and music, others investigated statistics, data, and potential resources for the problem.  Once the scripts were finalized, the groups filmed their skits.  It was quite a learning process for me and the students to work with the cameras, tripods, and other equipment!
The final step was putting the Public Service Announcements together.  The groups decided the approach they wanted to use in order to reach their viewers and set out to create moving, persuasive, and informative commercials.  Using Windows Movie Maker, the students combined their skits, images, music, and narrations with all the information they had previously gathered.  To conclude the project, the students watched all the Public Service Announcements and reflected on all they had learned and gained.
