Students “ripple” through project based learning that focuses on characters in fictional short stories.

Podcasting-

A podcast is an audio file that is usually in wav. or mp3. format, so that it may be transmitted digitally over the Internet and into digital audio players such as Windows Media Player or an ipod.

The students created a podcast in which they selected a character from a fictional short story that we read in class, chose a decision that they made in the story, and demonstrated how that decision affected other characters.

The Process-

Students worked in small groups where each student chose a role that best fit their abilities such as director, technical engineer, etc.  Once the roles were chosen and they knew the character and decision they would focus on, a format was selected.  Some examples of the formats are a call-in talk show and a newscast.

Focusing on the character’s choice and how it affected others, the students created outlines and scripts to assist in their recording.  They rehearsed the podcasts, adapting their voices to sound like the characters as well as adding sound effects.  Then, they recorded and edited them using the program Audacity.

The podcasts were similar to an essay in the way of having a beginning that introduces the topic, a middle that contains supporting details, and end that wraps up the entire piece.  The students gave background on the selected character’s traits, explained the motives the character had for making the decision, and demonstrated the cause and effect relationship between that decision and other characters in the story.
